How to play

The most popular slots are penny and nickel video games along with quarter and/or dollar reel-spinning games, though there are video games in 2-cent, 10-cent, quarter, and dollar denominations and reel spinners up to $100. Most reel spinners take up to two or three coins at a time while video slots can take 45, 90, and even 500 credits at a time.

Nearly all slot machines are fitted with currency acceptors - slide a bill into the slot, and the equivalent amount of credits is displayed on a meter. On reel-spinning slots, push a button marked "play one credit" until you've reached the number of coins you want to play. Then hit the "spin reels" button, or pull the handle on those few slots that still have handles, or hit a button marked "play max credits," which will play the maximum coins allowed on that machine.

On video slots, push one button for the number of paylines you want to activate, and a second button for the number of credits wagered per line. Very common configuration has 9 paylines on which you can bet 1 to 5 credits. Video slots are also available with 5, 15, 20, 25, even 50 paylines, accepting up to 25 coins per line.

Many reel-spinning machines have a single payout line painted across the center of the glass in front of 2. Others have three payout lines, even five payout lines, each corresponding to a coin played. The symbols that stop on a payout line determine whether a player wins. A common set of symbols might be cherries, bars, double bars (two bars stacked atop one another), triple bars, and sevens.

A single cherry on the payout line, for example, might pay back two coins; the player might get 10 coins for three of any bars (a mixture of bars, double bars, and triple bars), 30 for three single bars, 60 for three double bars, 120 for three triple bars, and the jackpot for three sevens. However, many of the stops on each reel will be blanks, and a combination that includes blanks does not pay. Also a seven is not any bar, so a combination such as bar-seven-double bar pays nothing.

Video slots typically have representations of 5 reels spinning on a video screen. Paylines not only run straight across the reels but also run in V's, upside down V's, and zigs and zags across the screen. Nearly all have at least five paylines, and most have more - up to 50 lines by the mid-2000s.

In addition, video slots usually feature bonus rounds and "scatter pays." Designated symbols trigger a scatter pay if two, three, or more of them appear on the screen, even if they aren’t on the same payline.

Similarly, special symbols will trigger a bonus event. The bonus may take the form of a number of free spins, or the player may be presented with a "second screen" bonus.

When you hit a winning combination, winnings will be added to the credit meter. If you wish to collect the coins showing on the meter, hit the button marked "Cash Out," and on most machines, a bar-coded ticket will be printed out that can be redeemed for cash. In a few older machines, coins still drop into a tray.

Payouts

Payout percentages have risen since the casinos figured out it is more profitable to hold 5 percent of a dollar than 8 percent of a quarter or 10 percent of a nickel. In most of the country, slot players can figure on about a 93 percent payout percentage, though payouts in Nevada run higher. Las Vegas casinos usually offer the highest average payouts of all -- better than 95 percent. Keep in mind that these are long-term averages that will hold up over a sample of 100,000 to 300,000 pulls.

In the short term, anything is possible. It's not unusual to go 20 or more pulls without a single payout on a reel-spinning slot, though payouts are more frequent on video slots. Neither is it unusual for a machine to pay back 200% or more for several dozen pulls. But in the long run, the programmed percentages will hold up.

The microprocessors driving today's machines are programmed with random-number generators that govern winning combinations. It no longer matters how many stops are on each reel. If it’s fitted that old three-reel, ten-stop machine with a microprocessor, it could put ten jackpot symbols on the first reel, ten on the second, and nine on the third, and still program the random-number generator so that three jackpot symbols lined up only once every 1,000 times, or 10,000 times. And on video slots, reel strips can be programmed to be as long as needed to make the odds of the game hit at a desired percentage.

CLASSIC SLOTS

An Online Slot machine in general will have three spinning reels. These reels contain 22 positions per reel and are marked with various symbols. The player spins the reel and every time a spin is made, the reels will rest with a selection of symbols showing in the game window. The symbols in online gambling slots line up in a random order.

The game

ROULETTE

Overview

Roulette is a casino bidding game. There is a dealer who takes bets and rolls the wheel and players who can make bids on the mat. There can be any number of players making bids at a time as long as each player has their own colored chip to distinguish them.

Roulette is a gambling game and is usually played for money. This means there are usually minimum and maximum bids allowed for each bet placed.

Roulette wheel

The wheel looks different based on which country you are in. In most places the wheel is composed on the numbers 1 through 36 randomly placed throughout the wheel. These numbers are either marked red or black. There is also a dividing number 0 that is marked green. In American tables however, there is both a 0 and a 00 that are green. This gives the American tables significantly worse odds.

Bidding

To bid players place their chip on the mat. Where they place their chip determines the bet being made and the odds and payouts of the bet. Multiple bets can be placed at once by players as well.

American mats vary slightly than traditional French mats, but the bids remain the same.

Bets and odds

There are several bets that can be made but they can be classified into three categories today based on their odds. There are even odds, 2 to 1 odds, and larger odds.

Bets with even odds include betting on red (rouge), black (noir), even (pair) or odd (impair) numbers. There is also the low (manque) bet of numbers 1 through 18 and the high (passe) bet on numbers 19 through 36.

Bets with 2 to 1 odds include the first dozen (premiere douzaine) spaces 1 through 12, the middle dozen (moyenne douzaine) spaces 13 through 24, the last dozen (dernier douzaine) spaces 25 through 36, and a column bet (colonne) which is placed on any column of 12 numbers.

Bets with larger odds include line bets (sixain) which is a bet placed on any line of 6 numbers and has 5 to 1 odds. There is also corner bets (carre) which include four numbers and are placed on the intersection of four numbers; these have 8 to 1 odds. There is a street bet (transversal) which includes a row of three numbers; it has 11 to 1 odds. Also included are split bets (en chaval) which is a bet placed on two numbers; these have 17 to 1 odds. Finally, there are straight up bets (en plein) which are bets palced on single numbers, and these have 35 to 1 odds.

There are also terms for inside and outside bets. Inside bets include bets that are made on 6 numbers or less and outside bets are ones that are placed on 12 or more numbers.

Gameplay

Once all bets are made the dealer spins the wheel and rolls the ball in the opposite direction. When the ball and wheel both come to a complete stop the result is announced. All losing bets are taken by the dealer and the winners are paid out.

There are special rules that can be played with. These include the EN prison and LA partage rules. For EN prison rules when a 0 the players have two choices. They can either take half their bet back and lose the other or they can leave the bet for the next spin of the wheel. For LA partage rules there is no choice, players just get back half their original bet and lose the other.

There are slight differences between American and other forms of roulette.

In America when the ball lands on 0 or 00 all bets not made on those numbers specifically are lost. They can also use the EN prison and LA partage rules as well but these occur when either 0 or 00 is landed on.

BLACKJACK

Objective

The game is played against the dealer, and the object is to get as close a score to 21 as possible without exceeding that number. In order to win, you must beat the dealers’ total, however, if you go over 21 points that’s considered a bust and you automatically forfeit your bet.

Card values

Kings, queens, and jacks are worth 10 points. Numbered cards retain their face value, meaning a two of clubs is worth two total points.
Aces are worth either one point or eleven points depending on what value advantages the player.

How to deal

The dealer deals to his left. Each player receives one card face down and the dealer deals himself last. From there the dealer deals another round of cards, this time placing the card face up. If the dealer deals himself an ace as the face up card then he is required to ask players if they would like to purchase insurance. Insurance must equal half of the original bet placed. The dealer then flips over the second card and if he has blackjack all players that purchased insurance are given their original bets back and players that also have a blackjack are give their original bets back as well.

How to play

If the dealer does not deal himself an ace as a face-up card, then players are asked if they would like to “hit” or “stand”. To hit is to ask for another card, to stand is to pass. If you choose to hit and then receive a card that puts you over the value of 21, you’ve busted and are now out of that round. You may continue to hit until you are satisfied with your hand.

Doubling down

Doubling down occurs after the first two cards are dealt. At this moment, the player is allowed to place an additional bet equal to the original wager. The player will receive one more card and then stand. A player that doubles down cannot ask for any more hits after he’s been dealt his third card.

Split

If your first two cards are of the same value, example two eights, you can split them into two separate playing hands. A split hand becomes two separate bets and the dealer will hit with a further card on each of the splits. Generally, one cannot hit, double down, or re-split after splitting their cards. Each table may have individual rules on this aspect of play.

Payouts

If you beat the dealer you receive a 1:1 payout, meaning if you bet ten you will receive your bet back plus ten from the dealer. If you hit a blackjack you will receive a 3:2 payout, meaning if you bet ten you’ll receive 15.

BACCARAT

Baccarat is a card game that is dealt from a shoe that holds 6 or 8 decks of cards. Two hands are dealt by the house dealer, the "banker" hand and the "player" hand. Before the hands are dealt, bets may be placed on the banker hand, on the player hand, or on a tie.
Winning bets on banker or player are paid 1:1, but a commission of 5% is charged on bank bets making the net odds on such bets 0.95 to 1. Some casinos may charge a lower commission.

Some sources report that tie bets are paid 8:1, while others claim that tie bets are paid 9:1, so this may vary from casino to casino. If there is a tie, bets on the banker or player are returned. Once a bet has been placed, there are no opportunities for further decisions - both the banker hand and the player hand are dealt according to fixed rules, resulting in final hands of either two or three cards for each.
The value of a hand is determined by adding the values of its individual cards. Tens and face cards are counted as zero, while all other cards are counted by the number of "pips" on the card face. Only the last digit of the total is used, so all baccarat hands have values in the range 0 to 9 inclusive. The hand with the higher value wins; if the hands have the same value, the result is a tie.

Rules for the player hand: If the player's first two cards total 6 or more, then the player must stand without drawing a card. If the player's first two cards total 5 or less, the player must draw one additional card.

Rules for the banker hand: If the banker's first two cards total 7 or more, then the banker must stand without drawing a card. If the banker's first two cards total 0, 1, or 2, then the banker must draw one card. If the banker's first two cards total 3, 4, 5, or 6, then whether the banker draws is determined by the whether the player drew, and if so the value of the player's draw card

KENO

To play Keno, you select a minimum of 4 but no more than 10 numbers between 1 and 80. Each selection is called a 'Spot', so if you select 10 numbers you are playing a 10 Spot game.

Keno tickets are located at tables throughout the casino and in the casino's Keno lounge. The casino provides a 'Keno crayon' for this purpose.

Simply mark a blank Keno ticket with the numbers of your selection. Then present your ticket to the Keno desk with your wager and the clerk will give you a duplicate ticket. In a few minutes, twenty numbered Keno balls will be drawn at random from a barrel containing 80 numbered balls, and if enough of your selected numbers are drawn, you are a winner. The results are displayed on screens, called Keno boards, throughout the casino.

Minimum bets can be as low as 5 cents, although some casinos only accept bets of $1 or more. The house's Keno brochures give you information about payoffs and various tickets you can play.

The amount of money you win is dependent upon the type of ticket you play and the number of 'spots' caught. You may play as many tickets as you wish. You could win as much as $50,000 on a $1 wager in some casinos.

The round of a Keno game is called a Keno race. In many casinos, 'multi-race' Keno is featured, where you can play a number of consecutive Keno races at one time.

The house advantage on Keno varies according to the Keno game played. It is always around 30% or more. The chances of hitting one number in 80 is 0.25%, making Keno among the worst bets you can make.
